Recently I’ve come across a few videos on YouTube about Europe’s anti-American agenda and I found it quite interesting, and truth be told spot on. Yes, we European folks have become quite unsympathetic or even hateful of your American ways. But let me ask you something: Can you really blame us?
I mean, first of all, let’s think straight, this so called hatred didn’t come out of the blue, something must’ve set it off, right? But still, that’s no excuse for hatred (and in my opinion nothing actually is, but that’s a whole nother topic). So let me justify our feelings.
Everyday we hear news from a kid who shot his fellow students and teachers, another gibberish coming from your dear President’s mouth, another cry for attention on your obesity rates, another celebrity in jail, and the list could go on! But seriously, it wouldn’t really matter that much to us if you kept yourselves in your fine country.
But you don’t. You see, you have a particular taste for picking on other countries, and yes, I mean Iraq. I’m not saying I don’t support democracy (I am European for God’s sake), I’m just saying that maybe, most probably, you (or better yet – your President) didn’t go there, or Afghanistan, for that reason, am I right? It just doesn’t do wonders for your reputation when every night there’s another hundred dead soldiers and civilians (and I’m not even going to talk about Guantanamo)
And if that wasn’t enough you’re also one of the biggest polluters in the world, only second to China! I mean, we’re making efforts, what about you? It’d be nice of you to try and cut back on pollution.
Of course, that’s only half the reason we don’t really like you people. You see, people - we all are kind of judgemental; it’s impossible not to be! And we can’t help but judge you and most of all dislike your social and political values. I mean, yes we’re liberal and socialists (well, at least more than you…), but if you look at our societies you don’t see nearly half the violence! Liberalism (not libertinism) is the best way to assure freedom of choice and hence the satisfaction and peacefulness within society. And socialism, well, what’s wrong with ensuring (or at least trying to…) everyone has the right to healthcare or a fair pay check?
However what really bugs me is how you’re so uptight in some ways and so irresponsible (for lack of a better word) with other, and by this “others” I mean mainly hand gun control. You see, you’re all very religious - no abortion, no gay marriage, no swearing on TV, and then… Then you have mentally disabled people buying top of the line guns and riffles online – does that make any sense to you? Here’s the thing: I cannot buy or own a gun in my country if I’m not a cop (not legally, I mean) and yet I do feel safe at night; actually I feel safer than if I had one in my home.
And the video games! Don’t get me started on that. Well, get me started on that: I mean, people can’t say sh*t on TV, but an eight year old can pretend to be killing every single man he sees? Where’s the distinction between reality and fantasy, where’s the distinction between good and evil kids need to learn?
Not to mention the amazing cinema you guys have? Isn’t it enough to have fast food for your body, you also have to have it for your mind? I mean, those movies, they sure are simple (and bloody… and violent… and unrealistic…).
Unfortunately, don’t you worry, because Europe is catching up on your taste for violence (and thank you very much).
I mentioned before the religious factor and I want to get back to that. You see, I admire people of Faith, I’m not one of them, but I honestly respect them. The thing is you’re a little too much. You’re still stuck a few centuries ago when people mixed religion with politics; and you can’t do that! You live in a country with people from all sorts of religions and ethnicities and it’s not acceptable if in a political debate you bring up religious arguments (but I guess that’s the American way to do it).
Oh, and… I don’t even know how to start about this part… Let’s see... I’ve just seen a clip from CNN, of a journalist interviewing people on the streets; he asked them to name a country that started with an “U”, ant«d they couldn’t even think of the U.S.A.; he asked how many sides a triangle has and some said none (it’s three, by the way); Someone pointed out Korea and another man Iran in Australia. I mean… hello?! This is your twentieth century wake up call! You’re supposed to know these things! It’d be understandable if it was an old farmer, but thirty year olds asking what was the U.K.? It’s just a little too much… Don’t you guys have schools over there?
See why it’s not just our media’s fault? You do it yourselves… I’m not saying that the European media isn’t distorting your reality a little too much, but when President Bush calls AIDS an addiction and says the best way to stop the forests and woods from burning down would be to cut down all trees and bushes, then it becomes a little bit your fault too. I mean, if that’s the guy you choose as your front man, how are you people supposed to be?!
Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate you all, just Bush. In fact, I couldn’t hate you all: I’m not a fan of generalizing, that’s why I know there are plenty of intelligent, successful, talented, amazing Americans. Most of my favourite bands are Americans; my favourite book is from an American writer, some of your movies are true masterpieces, and you have some interesting TV series, or even shows. I could go on with a list of names of Americans I admire and look up to. It’s not all bad. And some times one has to admit you hold your values incredibly high, you are proud of them, and that’s important.
Furthermore: as a History student I’d rather crucify myself than to say you’re all and have always been as dislikeable as I find you now and in general: you did amazing things, great things; you helped Humanity in ways no one can question. But that’s the past, and right now, in the present you’re hurting more than you’re helping, and that’s serious, that’s something you need to realize before going around playing victim.
I’m sorry if when you, as an individual, read this felt persecuted or offended, maybe you’re not the American I describe in the most part of this text, maybe you’re one of those I admire and didn’t vote for Bush; and in that case I congratulate you and I’m sorry if I offended you; but I do hope I helped you understand the European’s point of view, or at least mine.
So, in conclusion, I would just like to suggest a little something: get over your excessively patriotic selves and your pretty little flag and look from the outside: only then do you have the right to judge us for not liking you, because the picture here doesn’t look pretty.
(I'm sorry all you decent Americans out there!)
